What if a universal principle always worked in your favor? Giving someone that kind of advantange would make a huge difference in life, right? Newton’s Law of Motion (stay with me) says:
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
The principle giving you the advantage with life’s scales is far more reliable than Newton’s Law. However, it could be stated in a similar fashion:
For every opposite action* there is an unequal reaction
By now I hope you are at least intrigued. The Christian life is one paradox after another. In case you need a reminder:
- The first shall be last
- Lose your life to find it
- To lead we must follow
- Receiving follows giving
Giving And Grace
I recently preached in a church where a friend serves as pastor. He asked me to preach on grace. Part of my sermon made its way on to this blog; Grace: Your Glory Begun. A well-known Scripture verse was part of that sermon. It is what allows me to know the scales can be tipped in our favor. In fact, tipping the scale is God’s idea! And that is just one of the wonderful expressions of our Father’s grace.
As I prepared to preach I made a somewhat surprising discovery. This famous verse didn’t get much attention in commentaries and other study resources. In my research I realized it was God’s answer to something I find frustrating. And my frustration was due to a paradox noted above. It’s funny how the Word can turn our thinking around. But that’s exactly why we should study God’s Word. Our thinking must be aligned with His! If you doubt that, let me refer you to Romans 12:1-2.
This post serves as an introduction to a series of posts on Biblical giving. I’ll begin to unpack this well-known verse in upcoming posts. My hope is that giving everyone an introduction and a heads up helps others as much as my study helped me!
In the meantime, let me leave you with this graphic. If you could find that kind of sale on five dollar bills would you be interested? God’s plan is even better. Don’t miss the next post! 🙂
Soli Deo Gloria!
